It was our absolute pleasure at the South Australian Fire and Emergency Services Commission (SAFECOM) to host Dr Fabian Steinmann and Dr Annette Southgate from Cranfield University last week. This visit was a unique opportunity to exchange knowledge and explore the intricacies of resilience efforts, both in the UK and here in South Australia.

During their visit, we delved into a wide range of topics related to disaster risk reduction and resilience. One of the key themes of our discussions was the vital relationship between researchers and government agencies in advancing resilience. The collaboration between academia and government is essential for developing evidence-based strategies that can effectively address the complex challenges posed by disasters.

Fabian and Annette brought with them a wealth of experience and insights from their work at Cranfield University. Their perspectives on UK resilience strategies provided us with fresh ideas and approaches that we can adapt and implement within our own context. The discussions highlighted the importance of adaptive strategies, community engagement, and the integration of advanced technologies in building robust disaster resilience frameworks.

One of the standout points of our conversation was the shared recognition of the importance of fostering strong partnerships. Resilience is not the sole responsibility of any single entity; it requires the combined efforts of governments, researchers, communities, and various stakeholders.

The visit also underscored the value of continuous learning and adaptation. Disasters and emergencies are ever-evolving, and our approaches to managing them must evolve as well. Engaging with international experts like Fabian and Annette helps us stay abreast of global best practices and innovative solutions.

At SAFECOM, we are committed to fostering a culture of resilience and preparedness. Hosting experts from institutions like Cranfield University is a testament to our dedication to learning and improving. It also highlights the global nature of disaster risk reduction efforts and the need for international cooperation.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Fabian and Annette for sharing their expertise and experiences with us.

A special thank you to Paul Arbon AM and the Torrens Resilience Initiative team at Flinders University for making this visit possible.
